No one should be too taken aback by Congressman Phil Hare’s admission that “I don't worry about the Constitution on [health care reform] to be honest”. The part that drew a reaction from me was when he proved his devotion to the Constitution by citing…the Declaration of Independence!
I’ve seen countless people do this over the years, citing the “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” passage in the Declaration as an example of Constitutional justification for various policies and positions (often minus the words, “the pursuit of”). But…Hare is one of 435 representatives in Congress sword to uphold the vital US document – the supreme law of the land - that he apparently knows little to nothing about.
I think it bothers me more to have a congressman who is ignorant of the constitution than one who is hostile to it. At least with the latter you know what you have on your hands and voters can be held responsible.
The key word in his revealing quote that no one is talking about is, “honest”. His problem isn’t that he said it; it’s that he didn’t have the prepared dialogue to deal with the reactions.
But Democrats have been hostile to the Constitution for generations now. It’s a given when you consider the large contribution to the party by the poison known as progressivism. The very concept of progressivism is to change America in a fundamental way. The Constitution is the biggest obstacle to that change and frankly, the very reason we have and need a Constitution framed precisely the way it was.
This is especially true when you factor in that American progressivism is married to the concept of an all-wise, all-powerful, all-healing federal government. Followers of this un-American ideology display contempt and hostility to local control. The Constitution is supposed to be the tool that provides balance between the states and the federal government precisely to prevent the kind of national rule that progressive’s champion.
It’s evident when you look at history. The Left side of the spectrum is not afraid to turn legislative power over to the judiciary whenever the will of the people won’t allow their goals to come to fruition through the more democratic efforts of allowing the voters and/or their representatives to have the say. When activist judges give this narrow ideology its victories, this allows them to slowly redefine what we do and do not consider Constitutional Rights and freedoms.
Just look at the Constitution itself. Clearly stated Rights, such as the religion clause in the First Amendment, the right to arm yourself (2nd Amendment) and the right to govern ourselves – as states and as individuals - on matters not granted to the whims of the federal government (10th Amendment)…these are treated as questionable; mistaken; dangerous; outdated. To take their place, the Left provides us with the Holy Grail of Constitutional rewriting: the Right to abortion, the gift that keeps on giving and something that was never considered to be a federal problem (i.e. it’s not mentioned once in the Constitution – or the Declaration of Independence, for Rep. Hare supporters).
And if the Left has its way, there will indeed be a Right to health care; a Right to college; a Right to housing; a Right to food; a Right to a job or an income; a Right to virtually everything in life not actually granted by the Constitution (for good reason). Well, everything in life except…a Right to life.
Funny how their list of Rights corresponds with their list of entitlements…
The Constitution is clearly an annoyance to these people. A Democrat hero, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, even went so far as to try and change the Supreme Court in order to subvert the Constitution. He attempted to add six additional judicial activists to the high court in order to put those pesky justices, who were following the Constitution and thwarting some of the more egregious elements of his New Deal initiatives, in the minority. Fortunately, for every single citizen of this country, he failed.
Unfortunately, for Americans, other Democratic initiatives that run counter to the values in the Constitution have done great damage to this country. Democrats, progressives and the Left in general have been behind racist government policies going back to the slavery and post-slavery era; the Great Society that solidified the federal government as the operators of nationwide welfare; thought crime legislation that violates that First Amendment; laws that prohibit the free exercise of religion, and so on and so forth. In fact, religion – a right explicitly guaranteed by the Constitution – is corralled and boxed-in and cut down at every opportunity and takes a back seat to sexual preferences and choices, something that activists on the Left repeatedly declare as Constitutional Rights.
The goal of leftwing progressivism is in fact to turn the Constitution on its head and transform the country into a Bizarro World version of what the Founding Fathers intended. This is indisputable. Otherwise, why would we need a progressive movement?
In the WWII era, we had the Greatest Generation lay down their lives in masses to defend our Constitutional Rights against foreign threats and then return home to champion the growth and stability of this nation for their children. That victory allowed their spoiled children the comfort to manipulate and bastardize those very Rights. And after 50 years of this twisted and expensive manipulation, another great (albeit less bloodied) generation is rising up in the form of Tea Parties to challenge very real and troubling domestic threats to our Constitutional liberties. A Rasmussen poll showed a slight majority of Americans more aligned with the Tea Party movement than with the agenda of the Obama Administration and the big government Democrats in Congress.
These are Americans who sat back and lived their lives and contributed to society and ignored the Left’s assault on our greatest traditions and liberties, so long as it remained largely an annoyance creeping in through baby-steps. Now that we have leadership that has turned into the Baby Boomer’s dreams-on-crack, these previously sleeping Americans are worried – even terrified , whether they are the elderly who are watching government suck dry everything they have spent their lives building, or parents who fear that for one of the few times in American history, their children and grandchildren will have it worse off than they did.
This is why the time has come for a Constitutional revolution, to take back our birth right from the arrogant forces that are stripping it away, to return to local rule and state authority, to reign in the federal government. This revolution cannot succeed merely by focusing on the White House and a few Congressional seats but instead must start at the city, county and state levels. We must begin supporting councils, mayors, governors and state legislators who will begin turning away federal dollars attached to federal control with federal strings. We are already seeing this in action with several states suing to stop the most intrusive and destructive federal program ever passed into law – health care reform. The governors and attorneys general who are challenging some of the most egregious elements of health care reform are the American hero’s in today’s political climate.
To those who disagree with the notion that the Democratic Left are hostile to the Constitution only need to look back a few weeks and ask themselves why it is ok for bureaucrats in Washington DC to declare that purchasing health insurance is now a requirement for citizenship.
This is what becomes law when we elect leaders who “don’t worry about the Constitution.”
